| PHR/SPHR Certification Study
Course
The PHR/SPHR Certification Study Course is provided
as a tool to assist those preparing for the PHR/SPHR
exams. The Study Course is offered one night a week
for 8-9 weeks, for approximately 3 hours an evening
and highlight the topics covered by the exams.
Each semester,
GCHRAs Professional Development Committee provides an
overview of the six functional areas, responsibilities,
and associated knowledge as defined by the Human Resource
Certification Institute (HRCI). The Study Course is
offered in cooperation with the Society for Human Resource
Management (SHRM) as a preparation for the Professional
in Human Resources (PHR) and Senior Professional in
Human Resources (SPHR) certification examinations administed
by HRCI.
The Study Course provides content review, sample questions,
and the opportunity to work with other HR professionals
in your studies. The Study Course is not meant to provide
an all-inclusive preparation for the PHR/SPHR exam or
guarantee a passing grade. However, GCHRA wishes to
provide a valuable and effective learning experience
through the Study Course to enhance your preparation.

Format
In order to make the Study Course a more effective,
practical, and interactive experience, the format of
the weekly sessions will include content-driven power
point presentations, discussions (instructor’s
will identify the critical elements of each module to
be aware of and participant’s will present points
within the module they are unclear of), and pre-, module-,
and post-test assessments.

SHRM Learning System
SHRM LEARNING SYSTEM
Participants should obtain a copy of the SHRM Learning System.
The Learning System will be the curriculum for the program.
The Learning System includes texts, cd's, sample exams,
and many other tools to enhance your preparation fro the exam.
Those who purchase a copy can order it from SHRM at a discounted
rate $425.00 plus shipping if you are a GCHRA member or are part of
the Study Group. If interested, you can obtain an order form from the
GCHRA Office. GCHRA will have a limited number available to participants
for a discounted purchase. Preference will be given to GCHRA members.
Participants may elect to use the Mathis/Jackson text
titled Human Resource Management, 11th Edition.
The Mathis/Jackson text can be obtained at Amazon.com,
other retails sites, and many local bookstores.

HRCI Exam
Starting in 2004, HRCI will offer the PHR and SPHR
exams on a computer- based system. There is an eight-
week window in the spring and winter when the test can
be taken. For the spring, it is May 1st – June
30th and for the winter, it is November 15th –
January 15th. Registration for the exam can be handled
through www.hrci.org.
Please note that registration
for the GCHRA Study Course does not register you for
the exam.
Instructors
All of the instructors are HRCI or CEBS (Certified Employee
Benefits Specialist) certified HR professionals who
have expertise within the functional area they will
be presenting. A list of instructors, their professional
background, and contact information will be provided
at the first class session.
