This presentation will introduce the notion of civility in the workplace and how it can increase respect for all employees within a workgroup. In doing so, acceptance and inclusion will be enhanced for all members of the workgroup, regardless of sex, race, religion, or any other protected group. Hence, civility is more than simply a diversity initiative that often focuses on only one protected group. In addition, it will be argued that increasing civility will result in fewer claims of sexual harassment while also reducing organizational costs associated with absenteeism and turnover. Finally, an assessment of civility will also be presented.

Mark Nagy received his master’s and doctoral degrees specializing in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from Louisiana State University. He has been the Director of the Industrial-Organizational Psychology Master of Arts graduate program at Xavier University since 2000, and is also a Senior Consultant at Marcus Management Consultants, LLC, a consulting firm he co-owns with his wife. He has over 40 national conference presentations and 14 published articles in several journals, and has consulted for a diverse set of organizations, ranging from a non-profit local women’s shelter consisting of 10 employees to a federal agency which employed (at the time) more than 240,000 employees. He has also consulted on a variety of organizational projects, such as developing and analyzing employee assessments, conducting training needs assessments, providing statistical consultation, implementing leadership development projects, and creating customized employee engagement surveys. His latest work involves developing a valid measure of civility and demonstrating the impact civility has on both employees and employers in the workplace.
