Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.  This 8-hour training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care.

Learning Objectives:
* Common signs & symptoms of mental illness
* Common signs & symptoms of substance use
* How to interact with a person in crisis
* How to connect the person with help
* Assess for risk of suicide or harm
* Listen nonjudgmentally
* Give reassurance and information
* Encourage appropriate professional help
* Encourage self-help and other support strategies

Ms. Walker is certified  Adult Mental Health First Aid Youth Mental Health First Aid instructor. She has trained MHFA throughout the greater Cincinnati area and in Singapore. She is also a trainer for the NAMI Family to Family class having trained several others in teaching the classes. Ms. Walker earned her M.B.A. in business at Xavier University a B.S. in economics at University of Cincinnati and worked on her Doctorate in Education focusing on curriculum and instruction is a past member of Ohio Mental Health Planning Council and a past board member of Ohio PAIMI Council .
Gloria Walker is a member on the NAMI Ohio Board of Directors and executive director at NAMI Urban Greater Cincinnati Network on Mental Illness in Cincinnati. She s a past member of NAMI national  She has served on Ohio Disability Rights Protection and Advocacy on Mental Illness (PAIMI) council. She is on the board of Greater Cincinnati Behavioral Healthcare and serves on governance and finance committees. She is proud of her efforts in development of the NAMI Multicultural Action Center and encouraging all of NAMI’s efforts at diversity and inclusion including her personal outreach to Singapore, Johannesburg So. Africa, France and Cuba. She chairs Cincinnati Sister Cities, Nancy, France Mental Health Committee.
As the mother of an adult living with Schizoaffective disorder she advocates at the national, state, local and individual levels for proper treatment and supports of loved ones and all people living with serious mental illness. She also believes that education and support for families, communities and those living with mental illness plays an important role in early treatment and likewise, successful outcomes. She is executive director for NAMI Urban Greater Cincinnati Network on Mental Illness, which was founded to address the needs of access in the urban, under-served community.
