This “How To” workshop will provide participants relevant and actionable information and insights they will be able to use to development sound human resource and business plans regarding their most critical asset, their employees.  This diverse and highly regarded panel of presenters will provide expertise in key areas ranging from the employment market, employee wages, employee benefits and legal considerations that can and will impact your organization in 2020 and what action you can take to succeed.

Paul LaPorte, Economist – U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics; Office of Economic Analysis & Information
Provide an overview of wage data, labor cost, employment and business cycle data and trends that could impact human resource and business planning in 2020.

Gain insights regarding competitive wages in their respective industries, while learning how to fully understand and access available information from the BLS; Gain insights on current and projected trends in the employment market and how access to qualified labor may change over the following year.

Tim Hecker, Benefits and Wealth Management Consultant - USI Midwest 

Provides an overview of current trends of benefit cost and plan design options to help contain benefit cost and still remain competitive in your industry to attract and retain employees.    

Gain insights on the current trends and challenges regarding employee benefits in addition to understanding what innovate employers may be doing to proactively address these challenges, while still being able to offer a competitive benefit plan to current and prospective employees.

John Kirk, Attorney – Graydon

Provide an overview of what has changed and what may change from court rulings or legislation recently issued or currently under consideration to ensure compliance with labor laws and managing risk.

Gain insights on recent or potential court rulings, along with recent or proposed legislation that could impact employee relation decisions and practices that allow human resource professionals become more effective risk managers to provide guidance on critical business decisions.   

This “How To” workshop will conclude with an Open Panel discussion for audience members and panel participants to interact and discuss their questions regarding and insights to help ensure you and your organization are prepared for 2020.


Paul LaPorte is the Branch Chief and Senior Economist for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Midwest Region Office. BLS is an agency of the U.S. Department of Labor that collects, analyzes, and disseminates statistical data on the conditions of the overall economy.  Mr. LaPorte holds a B.A. degree in Economics from the University of Illinois. He has more than three decades of experience working in the broad field of labor economics and statistics. In his current role at BLS, he oversees the BLS Economic Analysis and Information division in Chicago, where he helps disseminate BLS data through reports, presentations, and the BLS website. 

Tim Hecker is a graduate from Miami University and American College, along with being a CLU - Chartered Life Underwriter® ChFC - Chartered Financial Consultant®.  Tim has been a Benefits & Wealth Mgt. Consultant since 1985, currently with USI Midwest. Tim focuses on providing employers measurable Employee Benefit Strategies and Solutions.  In addition, Tim provides Individuals with products that provide Peace of Mind that what is important to them is protected with: Life Insurance, Disability Insurance, Long-Term Care.  Tim also serves on numerous within the Greater Cincinnati area.

John Kirk is an attorney at Graydon who practices exclusively in the employee benefits/executive compensation field. He works with clients to design, implement, and administer retirement, pension, health, and welfare employee benefit plans. A significant part of John’s practice is to aid clients with ACA and other compliance issues and to represent clients before the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. Department of Labor, and the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation in disputes, plan audits, and IRS/DOL correction programs. John also counsels’ clients on employee benefits issues which arise in connection with mergers, acquisitions, and other business transactions.  John began his nearly 20-year benefits career at the U.S. Department of Labor/ Employee Benefits Security Administration where he was involved in employee benefits compliance investigation and prosecution matters.
